How It All Began: From Indonesian Barrel Waves to Building Documentation Every great business has...
Dewick & Associates had an unlikely start: a quest for surf.
Back in 2008, founder Phil Dewick needed a way to fund a trip to Indonesia outside the family budget.
The solution?
Taking on the one job no project manager wanted: O&M manuals. What began as a side hustle to catch waves quickly grew into a full-scale mission to take the headache out of construction documentation.
The Surf’s Up, But the Philosophy Remains
The trip to Indonesia happened (and the waves were great!), but the lesson stuck with us. It didn’t take long to realise that O&M manuals were just one piece of a much larger puzzle. Project teams were drowning in all kinds of paper trails, so we took that same straightforward, high-quality approach and applied it across the entire spectrum of building handovers.
Today, that exact same mindset drives everything we do at Dewick & Associates. We’ve grown well beyond our original O&M Manual roots to deliver a full suite of construction documentation, from commissioning plans and building user guides to technical authoring, as installed drawings, and compliance.
We still firmly believe that construction documentation shouldn’t be treated as a painful box-ticking exercise. Done right, every plan, drawing, and manual becomes a genuine, valuable asset for facility managers, building owners, and maintenance teams long after the construction dust settles.
We survived the wave of paperwork so you don’t have to, and we’re still taking the hassle out of building handovers today. Read the full story: How a surf trip built Dewick & Associates →
By late 2014, Dewick & Associates had reached a pivotal milestone. Having built a strong reputation as a trusted specialist in mechanical engineering and Mechanical O&M manuals, the business formally incorporated as an Australian Private Company.
Supported by a growing local client base in Adelaide, this period marked a significant expansion in the scale and complexity of our project portfolio. Securing the documentation contract for the new Royal Adelaide Hospital (nRAH), one of South Australia’s largest infrastructure developments, demonstrated our capability to deliver precise, high volume compliance and handover documentation under rigorous standards.
Combined with major university projects, including work for UniSA, 2014 established Dewick & Associates as an essential partner for mechanical services contractors across the region.
Expanded Australian Project Experience
Following our formal incorporation, the period between 2014 and 2016 marked a rapid expansion of our project portfolio across Australia. Building on a solid foundation of major South Australian health and tertiary developments, Dewick & Associates began partnering with services contractors across Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland on high profile commercial, government, education and healthcare projects nationwide.
During this growth phase, we established our capability to deliver detailed, compliant O&M Manuals and Mechanical Engineering across state boundaries, adapting seamlessly to varying regional standards, complex technical specifications, and multi-discipline project demands.
ENCHANCED TEAM AND SERVICES OFFERED
As Dewick & Associates grew, we invested in team members with construction and builder backgrounds. This added practical site experience to our technical expertise, giving us a better understanding of how different trades work together, where information is generated and where gaps can arise during a project. That knowledge helps us coordinate information more effectively and deliver documentation that reflects the way the building has actually been constructed, commissioned and handed over.
To maintain and enhance consistent quality across all construction documentation, we formally structured our team to include dedicated roles, establishing clear functions for Client Coordinators, Technical Writers, Engineers and Drafters.
This structured approach broadened our technical perspective and elevated the detail, accuracy, and completeness of our project outputs across all disciplines, allowing us to manage complex multi-discipline packages seamlessly and deliver complete end-to-end documentation across our core services, at the time.

Embedded QA Processes
With a growing multidisciplinary team and an increasingly complex national portfolio, Dewick & Associates turned its focus toward formalising and scaling our internal quality systems. This phase marked a pivotal transition: moving from relying on individual expertise to embedding a systemised delivery workflow for every document leaving our office.
We formally standardised how all technical authoring, engineering and drafting outputs were controlled, verified, and delivered. By introducing structured, review and approval workflows, we established strict operational control over every package.
Why Standardisation Matters in Construction
In modern commercial construction, documentation is not merely a formality, it is a critical compliance gate. Fragmented paperwork, missing commissioning data, or inconsistent O&M Manuals can stall practical completion, hold up final retention payments, and create operational liabilities for facility managers from day one.
By standardising our authoring and review frameworks, we directly solved these industry pain points:
By embedding these quality assurance mechanisms into our daily operations, 2019 set a new benchmark for operational excellence to ensure our clients received handover packages that were not only fully compliant, but added genuine long-term value to the built environment.

International Expansion
Dewick & Associates achieved a major milestone from 2020 to 2023, by expanding our operational footprint beyond Australia and New Zealand to enter the UK and Canadian construction markets. Navigating international handovers required a significant broadening of our technical capability, adapting our authoring and review processes to align seamlessly with regional building regulations, international compliance frameworks, and global asset management standards.
Operating across global jurisdictions also provided some challenges inlcuding mastering the nuances of local building codes, such as the UK’s Building Regulations and CIBSE guidelines, alongside Canadian provincial building codes and CSA standards.
Delivering Multi Region Value
Expanding internationally allowed us to offer our established, systemised documentation methodology to a global client base while integrating international best practices back into our core service delivery. Through combining local regulatory alignment with our structured authoring approach, we ensured main contractors, principlal contractors and mechancial and electrical contractors received compliant, operationally ready construction documentation regardless of project location.
Continual refinement and consolidation of our service offering enables improved efficiency, consistent quality, and greater value for our clients. As a specialist technical authoring partner, we deliver:
By establishing a proven track record across Australia, the UK, and Canada, the 2020–2023 era transformed Dewick & Associates from a national leader into a truly international documentation partner capable of servicing complex developments across multiple continents.
Launch of nucleus
Building on our established processes and quality procedures, the period between 2022 and 2024 marked a major technological milestone for Dewick & Associates. To address the long-standing industry challenges of fragmented communication, lost trade data, and opaque review cycles, we made a significant investment in developing our bespoke online portal, nucleus.
Designed specifically around the real-world needs of project managers, head contractors, and building operators, Nucleus provides a dedicated client and project interface. The platform centralises and streamlines the entire management, collation, tracking, and delivery of construction documentation throughout the complete project lifecycle.
In modern construction, managing hundreds of submittals, trade manuals, and engineering reviews across multiple subcontractors often leads to administrative bottlenecks. nucleus directly solves these issues by creating a single source of truth for all handover deliverables:
Real-Time Progress Tracking: Head contractors and project managers gain full visibility into document statuses, pending reviews, and outstanding trade data, eliminating guesswork and keeping projects on schedule.
Streamlined Collation & Review: Dedicated workflows simplify the submission and approval process, reducing manual follow-ups and shortening final review cycles with superintendents and consultants.
Seamless Lifecycle Delivery: By structuring asset data and compliance records digitally from early project stages, nucleus ensures that final handover packages are clean, fully verified, and immediately operational for facility managers.
The launch of nucleus transformed how our clients interact with their project documentation, combining our proven technical authoring expertise with a modern digital platform to deliver unprecedented efficiency, accuracy, and transparency across every handover.
