Kwanlin Dun First Nation Community Hub

Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada

The Kwanlin Dün First Nation Community Hub, a multi-purpose governance, social service, and cultural facility in Whitehorse, Yukon, represents a major investment in community-led infrastructure.

To support the handover of their new 3,750 m² Community Hub, Dewick & Associates was engaged by the head builder to deliver the project’s complete Building Handover Manuals.

Our focus was on producing handover documentation that gave the community’s facilities team a practical, accessible reference for the building, suited to a self-governing First Nation that manages its own community infrastructure in one of Canada’s most remote jurisdictions.

Project Value

Dominion Construction delivered the landmark Kwanlin Dün First Nation Community Hub (the Kashgêk’ building) in Whitehorse, Yukon. Shaped by First Nation self-governance and community engagement, the facility serves as the primary seat for local government services, cultural programming, and community gatherings.

The builder engaged Dewick & Associates to produce Building Handover Manuals that would give the First Nation a complete, practical reference for their new building.

Delivering construction documentation for subarctic infrastructure in northern Canada presents distinct operational hurdles:

  • Extreme Subarctic Climate: Documentation must detail maintenance routines specifically tailored to resist severe temperature fluctuations and freeze-thaw cycles.
  • Remote Geographic Location: Given the distance specialist trade contractors must travel to reach Whitehorse, local site staff require clear, immediate troubleshooting guidance.
  • Long-Term Staff Accessibility: To preserve institutional knowledge across personnel changes, the handover materials needed to be intuitive and accessible for facilities team members without formal engineering or construction backgrounds.

Dewick & Associates managed the complete compilation and technical authoring process through the dedicated work of our Client Coordinator, collecting product literature, warranties, compliance certificates, and care instructions directly from the project’s subcontractors and suppliers. Our in-house technical authors then compiled the Building Handover Manuals covering the building description, project team details, building fabric and finishes, product schedules, supplier documentation, warranty records and preventative maintenance log sheets, with content written in plain, accessible language that would be practical for the First Nation’s facilities staff from the first day of building operations.

The project resulted in Building Handover Manuals that give the Kwanlin Dun First Nation a complete, well-organised reference for their new community hub in Whitehorse. The documentation supports effective long-term facilities management of a building that plays a central role in First Nation governance, community life and cultural continuity in the Yukon. For the builder, the deliverable closes out the construction handover to the First Nation’s requirements on a meaningful community project in northern Canada.
